The Rose of Tralee

Yes that shite has been on the TV for the past two nights, some young wan from Queenland’s won it last night. Honestly I have no idea how anyone could watch such “Lovely Girls Competitions”.

Roses

For people that don’t know, this tripe has been on the national broadcaster each year for two night going back over forty years. It takes inspiration from a nineteenth century Irish ballad of the same name that recounts the story of a woman called Mary, who because of her beauty was called ‘The Rose of Tralee’.

The winning Rose is the girl deemed to best match the attributes relayed in the song: “lovely and fair”.

Where it differs to beauty pageants is that there is no swimwear section in the Rose of Tralee contest but they do have their ‘party piece’ where they sing a song, tell a story or do a bit of a wee dance, how nice!

’twas the truth in her eyes ever dawning,
that made me love Mary, the Rose of Tralee.

Me arse!

Sounds like a fun night in front of the television.

What do they win besides a crown?
