Random Breath Testing: The death of the Pub?

When the smoking ban came in a few years ago everyone was saying how it will be the end of a lot of pubs with people preferring to drink at home where they smoke.

Well they where wrong, some will argue otherwise but if pubs closed as a result, I’d put that down to they’re failure to adapt. I, a smoker, much prefer a smoke free pub.

But last week I went for a pint midweek and noticed how empty my local was, this could be down to the fact people a winding down after a long summer of hard drinking and what not but could the Random Breath testing affect Irish pubs.

Now, lets make this clear, I’m in no way in favour of drink driving and all for the Designate Dessie craic but Dessie can’t bring ya to work in the morning.

It’s the testing in the morning I’m really referring to here. Are the days of having a few pints at night gone, for fear of getting lamped in the morning?

Without getting in to facts here, but it takes something like one hour for a half a pint to leave you’re system. Lets say you have 6 pints on a Sunday night and you’re home by 11:30 so by the time you’re heading off to work at 7 or 8 in the morning you’re still well over the limit.

Will we see a change in the Irish pub culture or will keep going “til be alright in the morn”?
